When Faith and Family Conflict

Over at her blog, our Adoption columnist Heidi Hess Saxton has an amazing post today on a moving conversation she had this weekend with her mother.  Heidi is an adult convert to Catholicism, and was called on by her mother to defend her faith - she does so eloquently and with a passion that moved me to tears.  Please take a moment to visit Mommy Monsters Inc.: In the Company of God ... and Mary ... and Mom.

Author and CatholicMom.com columnist Marybeth Hicks has a beautiful new website which includes a great blog where she shares her take on parenting, politics, media and culture.

Marybeth shares her columns with us weekly at CatholicMom.com and always has an edifying opinion about family life. Her newest book Bringing Up Geeks: How to Protect Your Kid's Childhood in a Grow-Up-Too-Fast World comes out in July and will be a great addition to your parenting library. I hope you'll join me in making Marybeth's blog The Compass a regular stop along your blog-reading journey!

Mother's Day Celebration at CatholicMom.com

In anticipation of Mother's Day this weekend, we have some great Mother's Day resources at CatholicMom.com. How will you be celebrating this weekend?

My childhood memories of Mother's Day set a very high bar for the day. As the oldest of five children, I always loved bringing my mom breakfast in bed on the big day. She would sit up, surrounded by all of us and eating a special meal prepared by Daddy and the kids. There would be a parade of gifts, sometimes extravagant but most times simple, kid-made stuff that she always seemed to cherish. We couldn't wait to spend the morning spoiling her.

To this day, the place I always most wish to be on Mother's Day is in my Mom's bed! Since she lives in Mississippi, sadly this won't happen this year. I'm blessed to have the world's best Mom, and happy to have an occasion to celebrate her.

Caviezel Family's Adoption Journey

CNA has a wonderful story this week on actor Jim Caviezel and his wife's decision to adopt two children.

Of the many quotes in this inspiring story, this is my favorite:

“When you have great fear, that is when you are a Christian…you have no idea the blessings you have coming to you if you take a chance on faith.”

Amen Jim and Kerri and blessings to your family!

Who's Your Mentor?

Last week, I was stewing over a situation that arose related to a writing project. I spent a good half a day mulling over a particular question, then lost sleep later that night when a conclusion had still not arisen.

The next day, I was speaking with my mother on the telephone, and happened to mention the situation. I told her of my uncertainty and of the stress it was causing me. Her immediate advice was actually the perfect solution to my dilemma. Separated from the emotion of the situation, she was able to quickly come up with a resolution that I should have arrived at on my own.

Ninety nine times out of a hundred, this is the case. I should know by now that when confronted with issues like this, I need to automatically ask myself "WWMD?" "What would Mom do?" - I will admit to not always heeding her counsel, but she always provides an informed perspective.

Interestingly, my Mom's mentorship extends beyond parenting issues. I find her advice particularly salient on professional matters as well. Part of what makes this mentor relationship so helpful is the inherent trust that already exists between us. I don't fear that sharing a weakness or a problem will cause my mentor to respect me less, so I open up completely with her. By not holding back details, I am able to give her a clear picture of what is truly going on in a situation.

I have different mentors for different facets of my life, but my mother tends to be my most consistent source of wisdom. Perhaps this is because her faith perspective is always at the core of the advice she gives, and because she has such a good and giving heart. Ultimately, she believes in me enough to tell me what she really thinks.

Do you have a mentor? That person may not even realize that he or she plays the adviser role for you. Ask yourself today who you trust to turn to when you need good advice or simply a listening ear and a clear point of view.

The Perfect Mother's Day Gift

Just in time for Mother's Day, I have posted my review of The Heart of Motherhood: Finding Holiness in the Catholic Home by one of my favorite authors, Donna-Marie Cooper O'Boyle. This book was released last October and I am dreadfully tardy in reviewing it, but I want to give it my highest recommendation. Donna-Marie's writing style is so very inspirational and the book is a great read for any mother.

Our Lovely Donna Marie

Thank you so much to author, CatholicMom.com columnist and super lady Donna Marie Cooper O'Boyle for sharing this video clip. Donna Marie speaks with Earle from Standing Under the Sky about mothers and Mother Teresa. Please take a few minutes to enjoy and be inspired by this great little video! It's always so fun to see and hear my cyber-friends in living color!

Catholic Moms

I received an interesting and thought provoking email today from a Muslim graduate student. She was writing to ask me about the role of mothers in the Catholic faith. I gave her my succinct response and invited her to ask me more specific questions, but I'm curious what others might have to say on this topic. If you'd like to share, contact me at lisa@catholicmom.com or comment below.

Need a Little Lenten Inspiration?

I wanted to share that I've just posted a great interview with Laura Wells, author of A Marian Bible Study: Bringing Scripture to Life for Moms

I'm constantly receiving emails from people looking for great Catholic bible studies. Laura's book will now be one of the resources I highly recommend to readers. I would love to gather with a group of my friends in my home and do this particular study.

Empty Arms, Sad Heart

I know most of you are probably thinking by now that I gave up blogging for Lent - well, it sort of feels that way. Sitting at the computer, pouring out your heart, requires a few essentials: time and inspiration. For the past few weeks, I was lacking greatly on the time element thanks to the fact that I had welcomed my Mom/Nana and sweet little Patrick/PIII into my home for two weeks. We were too busy playing, feeding, and just trying to keep PIII occupied for me to feel like spending much extra time at my computer. The visit was wonderful!

I said goodbye to Nana early Wednesday morning. My coping mechanism for saying goodbye is always knowing when I will see her next, which seems to be May. I think I can probably survive that long. PIII's Daddy, Patrick II, arrived Wednesday evening to whisk him away. The look of sheer joy that crossed that baby's face when he saw his Daddy was priceless. The love is unmistakable. I'm not sure what PIII's Mommy and Daddy have done to turn him into the perfect baby, but whatever they're doing, they should keep it up!

With an empty home, or at least one filled with only it's usual occupants, I should have been back to blogging yesterday. Sadly, it was the Inspiration element that was lacking at that point. I needed a day to mope, to embrace the empty hole that seems to have formed in my heart. My hip misses holding a toddler while working around the kitchen. My arms feel sadly light and airy with no one to pick up and snuggle. My ears miss hearing Nana's voice first thing in the morning. My heart is sad and a little lonely...

Since he's only a little tike, PIII likely won't remember the two weeks he spent at our house. But I have a treasure trove of memories tucked away to last me until the next time he comes for an extended visit. When he grows up, he will probably enjoy hearing about the things he did as a baby. My own boys love nothing more than hearing about their crazy exploits as toddlers (for example, the time Adam broke his arm trying to fly out of the wagon in a superman costume). I will tell PIII about his favorite things as a 19 month old:

  • Walking out to the front yard to check the mailbox
  • Listening to his "Greg and Steve" CD while eating breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack and more snack. And saying "Again!" after every song
  • How he strangely seems to love watching American Idol (I wonder who turned him on to that!)
  • How his face brightened every time he saw feet walking down the stairs in the hopes of seeing one of his big boy cousins
  • How easily he went down for his naps and how he always woke with a smile on his face
  • How he said the names of those who meant the most to him: "Man" (Nana), "Am" (Adam), Eck ("Eric"), and Geg ("Greg")
  • How much he loved his outings to places like the pet store to see the "Cheepy Birds", to the playground where he would put serious effort into filling his bucket with sand, and on walks in the stroller where he always needed his cup and some animal crackers
I woke up at 2:30 yesterday morning and was thinking about how lucky I am to have family I love so very much. I truly consider my parents, my siblings, their children and of course my own Hendey Men to be life's richest treasures. I'm happy that PIII is back with the Mommy and Daddy he missed and loves so much and I'm happy that Gramps has Nana back home (at least for a little while), but I will miss both of them!

Now I just need to get my hands on Patrick P., Evan and Tyler for a couple of weeks!!!

Becoming Pizza Mom

I have the world's best Mom. There is no room for debate in my book. She raised (or rather, continues to raise) five of us with love, patience, and good humor. Now she's responsible for not only the five of us, but our five spouses (who also rely a lot on her) and several rowdy grandsons. My mom packs a well charged cell phone 24/7 because she's always on call. I think about her countless times each day, sending her good wishes and blessings, but also frequently thinking...

"WWMMD" - What Would My Mom Do?

Of her many talents and traits, one of the ones I respect a great deal is a moniker she took on when my youngest brother was in elementary school. She became "Pizza Mom" - the one who organized and implemented weekly hot pizza lunches at the cafeteria-less Catholic school Michael attended. Pulling off hot lunch for 600 plus hungry school kids on a regular basis should be something CEOs greatly admire on a resume. It should rank right up there with "excellent written and verbal communication skills" and "project management experience" as proof of someone who's really got their act together.

I'm not quite Pizza Mom yet - I have successfully ducked the duty of organizing a hot lunch at my kids' school for over ten years. But I'm in training - I always try to make myself available to help out, even when my schedule would be better served by remaining home and answering the ten zillion emails in my inbox. Taking time to hand out pizza or orange slices means getting to see and hug Adam in the middle of the day, saying hi and thanks to several hardworking Catholic school teachers, and being told "Thank you" over 400 times. Could there be time better spent than that? I don't think so. So today, I'm off to help my school's reigning Pizza Mom with whatever she needs.

Thanks Mom, for teaching me that being Pizza Mom is a goal worthy of my aspirations. You're the best!
