Unity Awards
If you're a Catholic music fan, you simply MUST take a few minutes to visit Grapevine today and watch Gerard Faucheux's videos from this weekend's Unity Awards event. I have said in the past how much I would like to attend the awards, and these videos gave a little sense of being there for some of the sights and sounds.Great job Gerard and thank so much Susan for sharing these online! Children, obey your parents in the Lord...
Today's first reading makes me miss my Mom and Daddy! Paul's reminder to the Ephesians that they honor and obey their parents is a good reminder for us kids of all ages.
In today's video reflection at USCCB, we are reminded that in many cultures, it is considered an honor and a privilege to care for aging parents. I hope that when my parents "age" (if they ever do), I will have the honor of caring for them to the best of my abilities.
Paul also reminds parents (well, he says "Fathers" but I'm adding Moms into the mix too) not to "provoke" their children to anger. Do you think Paul ever hung out much with toddlers, or with teenagers? Yesterday, I had a long, luxurious conversation with Sue Peters, a terrific Catholic mom, Life Teen minister and musician. Sue and I spent a few hours talking about all sorts of things, but one of the most important topics was the faith parenting of our children. Sue's children are so fortunate to have a mother who "walks the talk" and does it with so much infectious joy. Her music is tangible evidence of her love of her faith. I'm sure she rarely "provokes"! If you need a mini retreat today, visit Sue's Myspace and enjoy a few of her songs. She will be featured on an upcoming episode of Catholic Moments, but I don't want you to wait until then to enjoy her art.
So today, I'm going to work on honoring my parents (even if it's from a distance), by praying for them and not provoking my children by being spiritually, physically and emotionally present to them.
I'm hoping for a great day!

Take a Musical Journey to WYD
The Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity are offering a free download for young Catholics traveling to World Youth Day at their website.
“Come Holy Ghost/Enkindle”, performed by Kataluma, re-imagines the traditional hymn, correlating with the Pentecost theme of World Youth Day 2008. It’s both a benediction for youth traveling to Sydney, as well as a way for those who can’t attend to take a ‘multicultural musical journey’.
“Come Holy Ghost/Enkindle” begins with a ’summons’ to Sydney, played on an Aborigine Didgeridoo. Just as Catholic youth from around the world will bring their own culture and gifts to Sydney, it incorporates different rhythms, from Catalonian to Congolese, and instruments from around the world. Some include an accordion from Germany, electric guitar and dulcimer from the United States, kalimba from Angola, a saz, or lute from Greece, shaker from Peru, rain stick from Guatemala, harp from Ireland, trumpet from Mexico.
In deference to Pope Benedict XVI’s favorite composer, it even includes a brief passage from Mozart’s ‘Rondo Alla Turca’. Also, there’s a bit of Gregorian Chant.
In Mark’s Gospel, the Greek word Kataluma designates a “Dining Room” where the Last Supper takes place (and, some suggest, the same room where Pentecost occurred). More commonly, it describes the ‘breaking up or reprieve of a journey’. In this instance Kataluma designates the occasional coalescence of Milwaukee area musicians and creatives: John Tanner, Sue Bruk, Bob Monagle and Mark Kolter, who fashioned the transglobal approach to the hymn “Come Holy Ghost/Enkindle”
Sister Mary Carol, OSF, of the Franciscan Sisters Music Conservatory commented “How many people today hear or sing the hymn, “Come, Holy Ghost?” Although this is the title, the actual words are first heard about 2 and 1/2 minutes into the recording. The melody to the 19th century hymn is heard in bits throughout the piece.”
“Multiple listening to the song reveal a more complex composition than first expected. Our daily lives are also complicated. However, as the minutes and hours unfold, changes occur that lead to a profound belief in the Spirit who leads us through the ups and downs of each moment.“

Blast from the Past!
I'm working on a special project to help celebrate the 90th birthday of my favorite priest, Msgr. Michael Collins from Seal Beach, California. In scouting around for songs to include, I found this video which reminded me so much of my childhood. Fr. Collins used to love to sing this song to us, and it became a family favorite of ours. I used to be pretty good at playing it on my guitar too!

Audio Rosary Resources
Catholic News Agency has a story today about audio recordings of the Rosary led by Pope Benedict XVI. The four CD set features the Holy Father leading the Rosary in Latin. I found this excerpt from the article to be very inspirational:Father Lombardi also underscored that Benedict XVI has a “profound Marian devotion. He prays the Rosary every day with his secretaries while walking, and thus he invites us to us this prayer: simple, humble, daily, which everyone can pray with devotion and which helps us also to meditate on the mysteries of the life of Christ together with Mary, who is obviously the person closest to Christ.”
