That Ten Commandments Song - The Beauty of Blogging!

On July 7, 2005, I posted a query for a reader named Patti who was looking for the complete words to that ubiquitous "Ten Commandments Song". Today, over three years later, the mystery has finally been solved by an anonymous commenter who finally shared the missing lyrics. For those inquiring minds who want to know, here are the words:

First I must honor God
Second honor his name
Third on his day keep holy, this will be my aim
Four I must be obedient
Fifth be kind and true
Sixth be pure in all I say and see and hear and do
Seventh I must be honest
Eighth be truthful in all things I say
Ninth be pure in mind and heart in all I think and desire each day
Tenth I must be satisfied and not be jealous come what may
These are God's ten commandments
These I must obey.

Whether these are totally correct or not, I can't say - seems to be some redundancy on truth and honesty issues! Regardless, thanks for your perseverance dear Anonymous! Thanks to you a mystery has been solved and now I have this song stuck in my head!

I would love to know the tune for this - is it a piggyback song or does it have its own unique melody? I try and get my 2nd grade CCD kids to learn the 10 commandments every year, but without much luck. I think a song would definitely help!

Jennifer,
It's sort of a classic, but surprisingly I've been unable to find a recorded or video version. Maybe one of our sleuths can find a youtube version and link to it. Sorry I can't sing it for you in person - on second thought - you're lucky I can't!

I have been trying to find these words for over a year. I had 12 years of Catholic school in Ft. Lauderdale, FL...I wanted to teach the words to my own children, 12 and 10 and the 3 yr. olds that I teach. Thanks for bringing back the memories and a song that I loved to sing as a child!

Seton Home Study School (www.setonbooks.com) used to put out a tape that had this song and some other classics on it. I couldn't find it on their website just now, but it is worth calling them to inquire about it. I'll bet they do still carry it.

There's also a 10 Commandments song to the tune of "The Twelve Days of Christmas" by the Dogma Dogs, that my class liked. Most kids knew the melody, and if they didn't, they learned it quickly enough because of all the repetition.

For years I've been searching for the lyrics after the eighth so that i can teach my grandchildren. i love singing this song as well as the other classic about the devil. it starts off with "mommy told me something a little girl should know, it was all about the devil and i learned to hate him so"

When I was growing up in the 1950s my six siblings and I listened to an entire album entitled "The 10 Commandents." It began with the commandents (lyrics similar to ones listed here but not at all right - I remember enough to know it's not accurate), but I can't find the songs. Each sacrament had its own song, sung so purely and beautifully. My family album is long gone but I can't get the music out of my head after all these years. Good luck.

I don't know if anyone ever supplied the answer to the song about the devil, but if you still need, here is a link to it.
It's called "Open Up Your Heart and Let the Sunshine In," and it was sung by Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm in the premiere episode of the sixth season of "The Flintstones" in 1965. It's the series most famous/infamous episode. People either love the episode (like me) or despise it.

I know the melody for the first 2 commandments, but have to skip the 3rd, then I can do 4th, 5th and 6th. I loved this song when I was in 1st and 2nd grade, but for the life of me I cannot remember the melody. But thanks for filling in the words. Maybe if I keep trying, I will find the melody buried in my brain somewhere.

Thank you for sharing the lyrics for this song...I have been searching for them for a few years now...It is a song I learned as a child in the catholic elementary I attended and as far as I remember the lyrics...up until 5 are the exact as I remember them.

This song was sung by a boy's choir and recorded on wax (not vinyl) in the 50s. Does anyone know the name of the choir or if the recording has been digitized?
